Agility
Katrin has been involved in agility since 1996 and currently has two Flat-coats, Regal and James. She got into agility with a retriever mix that also started her in 4-H and obedience, but agility turned out to be her real love. Her agility experience has been mostly through club involvement—teaching classes, running trials and building equipment. She is the trial chair of a small NADAC agility group that puts on trials all over the Northeast and also a NADAC judge.

Dogs are her passion that is also a family affair. She has been working and showing dogs since she was eight, when she got her first dog and showed in 4-H.
With her dogs, she has participated in almost every dog sport at some time or another but prefers agility and freestyle since she feels it gives you the closest relationship with your dog. Through her participation in agility she became a USDAA agility judge and continues to teach agility, incorporating positive methods to learn while having fun. She is also a freestyle judge. Bev started freestyle at Camp, with Sonic her Border Terrier. He became the youngest dog to receive a freestyle title in the World Canine Freestyle Organization. He is now Champion Josanah's Sonic Boom, NAJ, W-DD-HTM/MF, W-FDX, W-BM-BTM/MF. This computes to his being one of the top eight titled dogs in the country.

Obedience
This Fall will be my 4th trip to Camp Gone to the Dogs all the way from Australia – I was so impressed after my first trip that we are now building our own "Camp Tailwaggers" on our property (see web site) along a lot of the same lines. This year I will be honored to be back as an Assistant Obedience Instructor for the whole 2 weeks at Stowe– hooray!!
I have been involved with dogs all my life and obedience training for 30 plus years. I hold 12 titles including obedience and two breed Champions – our Golden Retriever kennel prefix of "Anntanas" currently has 26 titles. I am President of the Queensland Border Dog Obedience Club here on the Gold Coast and teach all levels of obedience. I am also the Trial Secretary for the Golden Retriever Club in Brisbane and Life Member of several other obedience clubs in Australia. I travel to other states and give obedience workshops and seminars and I like to go to Crufts in England every few years (I am originally from Belfast, Northern Ireland, so call in to see the family as well). I am currently competing in Open Obedience with "Indiana" my 5 year old male Golden Retriever (or Goldie as we call them) – and "Fudge" a 4 year old female in Novice – plus "Toffee" her daughter who is just starting out in obedience. Their Mother "Emerald" has her CDX title and was competing in UD. Along with my husband Tony (and marvelous staff) we own and operate Coolangatta Pet Motel on the Gold Coast between Sydney and Brisbane on the east coast. It is a large boarding/training/breeding facility on 77 acres with ocean views and tropical rain forests - catering for 200 dogs and 60 cats and our own 6 Goldies. We also run "Camp Tailwaggers" training weekends with overseas, interstate and local training experts. Last year saw a weekend seminar hosted by the fabulous Mary Ray from England (she is the lady who does dancing with dogs at the end of Crafts each year). Work has just started on our training areas, conference room, amenities and 10 doggie friendly Holiday cabins. We also breed Golden Retrievers specifically for obedience competition. The new "Camp Newswire" is a great idea for all us Campers to keep in touch throughout the year – good on the Editor for doing such a good job!!

I started training dogs professionally when I was 18. I have worked at an animal emergency clinic for over 18 years, so know everything to be paranoid about with my dogs! I got hooked on herding when my dog Jack liked agility, but LOVED herding! The neat thing about herding is it really engages me mentally and physically. You need to see the big picture, what does my dog need work on overall, balanced with what are the sheep and dog doing right now, plus don't get run over by the livestock! I really get to see the dogs thinking and working things out in their head. Teaching the teamwork to both dogs and their people is very rewarding.

He is a member of Keystone Agility Club and has been teaching beginning, advanced and master level classes for the past four years. In 2002 and 2003, He and Rosie competed in the Purina Incredible Dog Outdoor Adventure held in Steamboat Springs, CO.

Karen was a trainer at Canine Consulting from 1986 to 2004. She has extensive experience owning and showing Terriers, Dobermans and Golden Retrievers. She now works at the DogSpa in Beverly, Massachusetts and also runs four "Proper Puppy" classes a year. Karen teaches at North Shore Community College for the Veterinary Tech, Grooming and Animal Care Specialist Programs.
Karen has bred Golden Retrievers, some of whom have become Wheelchair Assistance Dogs. Her dogs are active in community programs, visiting nursing homes and participating in educational programs. Two of her Goldens have been used in advertising campaigns. Since training her first terrier 30 years ago, she has continued to develop affection for her canine companions adding two rescue Maltese and a Rottweiler to her household. Her latest love is long-haired Shepherd Tregan, a calm steady guy who chose her (when she had no intention of getting a dog).
Karen uses gentle and pleasant instruction methods. The primary goal in all classes she teaches is to create a positive understanding between humans and their canine companions.

Jim's experience in agility started about fifteen years ago with two wonderful Goldens as a cross-training exercise. Eventually he began competing in agility with Emily, his first Cavalier companion. She was a great partner and theydid well competitively until she started having seizures at an early age. Theycontinued to train, went to matches and entered an occasional trial to continue our working relationship. Their bond and partnership grew even stronger. Oneness in effort compensated for lost speed and they accumulated a few more 'Q's' and titles along the way. Until Jim relocated to New England, he was teaching agility with some great folks in Pennsylvania. Now that he is settled in New Hampshire, he is teaching again. Currently,he is teaming in agility with Polly and Caitlin, two Cavaliers. They have both earned a number of titles at events in northern New England the last two years. At a recent small dog event, Polly and Jim were the only team to successfully complete a challenging sequence of obstacles in time and capture the "Golden Snitch"—a once-in-a-lifetime glorious moment.

Anne is an employee of Tails U Win in Manchester, Connecticut, owned by Leslie Nelson. In addition to assisting with group classes at "Tails," She is currently training her own dogs in obedience, tracking, agility and conformation. The Hassett dogs are also weekend hunters. Anne finds life with dogs to be an endless, enjoyable passion which she loves to share with others with a sense of humor and a positive approach.

Maribeth has been involved with training dogs since the early 1980's, with a wide mix of breeds, all but one rescues. Most all of the dogs have been CGC and TDI certified, visiting nursing homes on a regular basis. A couple of her dogs have gotten more advanced titles in obedience and agility. Several of her dogs have had difficulties in adjusting to the world outside the shelter. Sadie, her Treeing Walker Coonhound came from a university laboratory, and found the world very frightening. Together Sadie and Maribeth discovered clicker training and life has just gotten better and better since then. Emma, a Pit Bull from a local shelter, developed severe behavioral issues requiring professional help. Maribeth and Emma traveled to the University of Pennsylvania to work with Karen Overall. Unfortunately Emma's neurological problems proved to be too difficult to treat, even with protocols and drugs. Her dogs, Potter and Spencer continue to excel in Agility, Rally and Flyball. Potter, CGC, TDI is now competing in Excellent in AKC, Open in NADAC, and Advanced in USDAA. Spencer (aka Clem Kaddidlehopper) has completed his Elite Tunnelers and Open Weavers titles in NADAC, has finally moved to Open in AKC classes, and has a couple of Starter legs on USDAA. We only compete about 8 or 10 times a year, so we are obtaining a decent Q rate!
From these and other experiences, Maribeth has learned a lot about people, dogs and training. She has been teaching obedience and behavioral classes at the Western Pennsylvania Humane Society since 1998, and agility and flyball at Splash and Dash K9 Sports since 2001. During the day, Maribeth is an architect and a landscape architect working for a public agency managing design and construction of public improvement projects. Maribeth's goals for training and life are to have fun and celebrate even the smallest achievements. Life is too short, especially for our four footed friends, not to celebrate and enjoy everything we do. And through the celebration, you and your dog will learn, bond and form a relationship that will last a lifetime.

Barb has always been involved with dogs starting at a very early age training the family pets, advancing to the neighborhood dogs and gradually moving on to a more formal operation. She has led dogs to American and Canadian obedience titles, participated on a competitive flyball team, participates in the Therapy Dog program which she started at a local hospital, is a puppy raiser for Leader Dogs for the Blind of Rochester, Michigan, is on the local animal control advisory board and currently specializes in teaching Veterinary Puppy classes.
Her canine family members include Nick, a German Shepherd and Barb's first Leader Dog puppy. (His career changed due to some minor health concerns.) Nick is a Frisbee dog and all-around good buddy. Next is Marley, a Border Collie from Roy and Debbie Johnson's legendary herding dog Jim. The newest kid on the block is Tyler, another smooth-coat Border Collie from the local animal shelter.

Barbara Janelle is a Tellington Touch Animal Companion Trainer and TTEAM (Tellington-Jones Equine Awareness Method) Practitioner with 18 years experience. In 2000 she moved from London, Ontario, Canada, where she lived for 31 years, to Santa Barbara, California. Barbara works with dogs, cats, horses and other animals addressing behavior, health and performance issues. Barbara says that her primary work is to help humans develop deeper understanding and love for their animals.
Barbara presented Tellington Touch workshops at the 1998 and 2000 annual meetings of the Canadian Association of Professional Pet Dog Trainers (CAPPDT) in Toronto. She was the only non-veterinarian speaker at a major holistic health conference for animals in Waterloo, Ontario in 2000.
Barbara is also a recognized teacher and practitioner of Therapeutic Touch (Krieger/Kunz) and a leading expert in North America on the use of TT with animals. She writes a regular column for In Touch, the Journal of the Therapeutic Touch Networks of Canada.
Interspecies communication is another of Barbara's skills. A section on her work appears in Communicating With Animals by Arthur Myers (Contemporary Books, 1997). Her articles on communication are published regularly in Species Link. Her book, Embodiment of Spirit: Learning through Therapeutic Touch and Interspecies Communication, published in 2003, is a compilation of her writings and includes a writing on her work at Camp.
Barbara says, "I love working with animals and their humans. The tremendous breakthroughs in understanding and heart-to-heart connection between dogs and humans that comes with Tellington Touch, Therapeutic Touch and Communication make my work very exciting. Roy and Debbie Johnson

Roy was born and raised on a farm in Virginia where his family raised tobacco and livestock. Roy and Debbie now live on Breezy Hill Farm in Gladys, Virginia. They have approximately 300 head of sheep, 85 head of cattle and a few horses, chickens and rabbits.
Roy started working with border collies after he lost his hands in a hay baler accident in 1984. His first working dog Rosco a red and white Border Collie, went on to place consistently in the top at trials in the U.S. and Canada. Roy has qualified many times to compete in the prestigious United States Border Collie Handlers Association (USBCHA) National Finals with Rosco, June (Rosco's daughter, who won the 1987 USBCHA Futurity), Craig, Jim and most recently Sonny. Sonny qualified for the 2004 USBCHA National Cattle Finals in Green Forest, Arkansas, and was fortunate enough to be asked to compete. Out of the 60 dogs that competed over the course of three days, Roy and Sonny's runs were consistent and ranked third going into the final round of competition. They were the last run of the day and finished 12th overall.
Roy is a licensed AKC herding judge, an American Herding Breeds Association (AHBA) judge and has judged numerous USBCHA trials. Debbie has recently become an AHBA judge, having earned a HTDIII title with Chip. She is now trialing Abby.
Roy has been working with all herding breeds (and some non-herding breeds) since 1986. He has been teaching herding at Camp since 1996 and enjoys helping people and their dogs discover how to herd.
Roy and Debbie enjoy traveling with the dogs, whether for competitions, demonstrations or teaching—it's a family effort.

New England Search and Rescue
Nancy is a four-time certified airscent SAR dog handler and president for New England K-9 Search and Rescue, an 18-member, all volunteer airscent search and rescue unit responding to searches in New Hampshire and Vermont. She has participated in over 200 searches with her three German Shepherd dogs (Sage and Keeper now deceased and Trace, six years old). In October of 2001 Nancy agreed to foster a ten month old female Malinois who had arrived at the Upper Valley Humane Society Shelter in need of civilizing as is often the case for working dogs. Nancy renamed her Quiklie and adopted her after two weeks. This wonderful surprise gift of nose, heart, agility and mind passed her wilderness certification in the fall of 2002, making her Nancy's fourth search dog. All of her dogs are trained for wilderness airscent and cadaver recovery (underwater, buried, and debris).
Nancy is certified with the National Association for Search and Rescue in search management. In April of 2004 she and her team made two successful searches in New Hampshire, finding 4 children alive. Trace was the actual dog who found the children on the second search. She has co-authored a seventy-page training manual with Dee Ganley, training center manager and behavior consult to the Upper Valley Humane Society. From her training manual: The only mistakes my dogs make are the ones I've taught them.

Lynne has been teaching pet and competition obedience classes for over 30 years. She has been a member the National Association of Dog Obedience Instructors (NADOI) since 1985. Together with her canine teammates, Lynne has earned many AKC titles, with many class placements and several High in Trials. The present Mayo pack consists of Standard Schnauzer CH. Lynne's clients have earned many placements at obedience trials and national competitions. She especially likes to develop and lead "specialty" classes which focus on training Attention, Advanced Obedience exercises, Obedience Games, Stays, Retrieving and Heeling. Lynne believes that clicker training is not only useful for teaching dogs basic behaviors but is also useful to trainers who wish to "fine-tune" their team's skills.

Trisha is a Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist who has been working with serious canine behavioral problems for fifteen years. She has a nationally-syndicated radio show and is the behavior columnist for the BARk Magazine, (the New Yorker of dog magazines), as well as being a Consulting Editor for the Journal of Comparative Psychology. Trish is an Adjunct Associate Professor in Zoology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she teaches 'The Biology and Philosophy of Human/Animal Relationships.' She has had the honor of speaking to training organizations, veterinary conferences, academic meetings and animal shelters around the world about dog and cat behavior. She is the author of The Other End of the Leash: Why We Do What We Do Around Dogs and nine other books and booklets about dog and cat behavior.

Sean McMurray's interest in dogs began in 1983 when he obtained his first puppy, a Lab cross. This dog was soon followed by the first of three white Shepherds. More recently a Standard Poodle and a Whippet have joined his family.
Sean began teaching classes in 1990 and has been an instructor at Tails-U-Win in Manchester, Connecticut for the past seven years. He teaches ten pet obedience classes each week and is also involved with competition training and classes, private lessons and behavioral consultations.
Sean and his Standard Poodle Storm have completed their CD title, placing in every Novice A class they've entered. Quickly becoming afflicted with competition addiction, they plan on competing for their CDX title. He credits his dog's enthusiasm and success in the ring to 100% positive training methods.

I have owned and shown shelties for over 25 years. I began training under and then assisting Evelyne Kavanaugh (she was one of the first trainers in CT). Seven years ago I set out on my own teaching obedience, rally and agility. I have put CD's, CDX NA, NAJ and Rally titles on my dogs and am working on Utility with two of them.
When Rally was introduced I found a new avenue that my dogs can compete in and they love it! This fall I completed all requirements to become a Rally Judge and am enjoying every minute of judging. At the present time I am teaching 3 Rally classes, 4 obedience classes and 6 agility classes.

Teaching Obedience Classes Positively
Leslie is the Director of Tails-U-Win! Canine Center in Manchester, Connecticut, founded in 1991. She oversees a training program that employs 18 instructors. All the classes are taught using positive reinforcement in order to gain the desired behavior. Students travel great distances to attend classes at Tails, not only because of the positive methods, but also because of the positive results.
Leslie's involvement with purebred dogs began over 30 years ago, although she's been working with and training all types of animals her entire life. Her first purebred dog was an Afghan Hound who was also her first UD and her foundation bitch for Sheimar Hounds. Leslie has actively exhibited in breed, obedience and lure coursing and is proud to have bred 5 generations of advanced titled obedience hounds. She has attained UDs on two Afghan Hounds, both highest scoring Afghans in their respective years, and CDXs on 2 other Afghans, as well as obedience titles on her other dogs. She continues to actively compete in events with her own dogs which include not only the Afghans, but also Whippets and Standard Poodles, her latest being a black St. Poodle puppy Lola Lately she and her homebred Whippet Scarlet have been racking up agility titles in grand style—AKC AX and AXJ.
She has a degree in education and has been instructing pet and competition classes since 1973. Today she continues to instruct classes, give private lessons and consults privately on behavior problems. Leslie also gives seminars for instructors on the effective use of positive reinforcement. She has also been very busy giving seminars in this country and Canada on the hows and whys of positive training. She was invited to work with Fidelco Guide Dog School in Connecticut on implementing positive training methods there.

Harriet is a graduate of Wheaton College in art history, she received a Master of Arts from the University of Massachusetts in art education and is a graduate of the Hallmark Institute of Photography where she specialized in portraiture and received the Most Professional Portfolio Award.
An animal lover, Harriet has had great success with animal portraiture. In her formal studio portraits, she carefully poses the dog or cat in order to feature the breed's physical characteristics and the individual animal's personality. She works closely with the owner to properly capture the animal's dignity and charm. Her work has been published in Cats, The Rangefinder and Dog World magazines and by Landmark Calendars. Over 20 of Harriet's dog photos have been chosen to be the covers of dog calendars—most which were CAMP DOGS!! One of hers (a mini-dachshund) was on the cover of the AKC Gazette.

Bonnie Peregoy

Competition Obedience, Show & Gos, Really Reliable Recall
Bonnie Peregoy has owned, exhibited and bred Afghan Hounds since 1973. She is past president of the Talbot Kennel Club and the Potomac Afghan Hound Club, and was National Obedience Chairman for the Afghan Hound Club of America. She has a thorough knowledge of AKC competition rules, having attended several AKC judges seminars, judged AKC sanctioned fun matches and served as an AKC obedience trial chairman. She has been an instructor of beginner and advanced competition obedience classes as well as pet obedience classes. While trying to put a UD title on her best friend Moon (a Best-in-Show Afghan), she became disillusioned with the commonly used aversion or compulsion techniques of dog training and threw away her leash to embrace the exclusive use of Positive Reinforcement Behavior Shaping. Her journey to understand the effective use of behavioral science as it applies to animal training led to the formation of The Healthy Dog Store. She has produced video and audio tapes featuring Leslie Nelson of Tails-U-Win, the latest being the Really Reliable Recall; Patty Ruzzo, nationally-acclaimed speaker and obedience competitor; and Ted Turner, curator of animal training for SeaWorld.
It becomes apparent that as one develops an understanding of how dogs process information and learn, that "Show & Go's" or matches are a critical component to getting trained behavior into the competition ring. Many exhibitors are frustrated or defeated by the simple behavioral phenomenon of "context shift." Bonnie hopes the Campers will embrace the "Show & Go" ring as a valuable resource opportunity to reinforce trained behavior in the context of a competition ring, increasing their dog's chance of success in an actual show situation.
Bonnie owns and operates a grooming salon on Capital Hill in Washington D.C.

Mare Potts was training her Sheltie Jake for Obedience Trials when she was recruited by a flyball team in need of some new dogs. She has been involved in the sport since 1993, racing and managing teams that have ranged from highly competitive to recreational. She has achieved the ONYX title with Jake and Scout, and the FDGCH title with Scout.
Mare entered a local canine disc competition with her terrier mix Scout, and became hooked on the sport. Mare and Scout went on to become one of the top teams in the world, competing in the finals at the USDDN for 2 years. In 2005, Scout and Mare were the Skyhoundz Micro Dog World Champions. Scout is also the World Record holder for a canine disc catch by a small dog. Scout has been one of the few small dogs in the world that could compete with the big dogs. Mare currently competes with Ricochet (Border Collie), Carson (Australian Shepherd/Border Collie), Rascal (Australian Shepherd) and Lasair (Australian Cattle Dog). All are rescues that came either from shelters or are private adoptions.
Mare owns Flydogs, in Aurora, IL, a dog training and dog entertainment business. She trains dogs in basic obedience and behavioral opportunities for her clients and a local shelter. Flydogs entertain at Fairs, Festivals and Events in the Midwest with a show that includes canine disc, flyball, agility and tricks.

Sue has a broad background in the handling and training of dogs. She began her career as a dog control officer in rural Massachusetts. At the ASPCA in New York City, Sue developed her obedience skills, counseled the public regarding pet behavior problems, taught volunteers and staff how to safely and humanely handle shelter animals, evaluated the temperament of shelter dogs and made recommendations for placement and euthanasia. Sue has been a group obedience instructor for the Port Chester Obedience Training Club in White Plains, New York; the Canine Workshop in New York City; and the ASPCA. She now owns a boarding, training and adoption kennel that strongly advocates humane dog handling and public education. Sue lectures around the world to animal shelter workers and dog trainers on all aspects of working with shelter dogs, handling skills and obedience training and instructing. Sue is one of Northeast Public Radio WAMC's most popular guests for the Vox Pop call-in show on pet behavior.
Sue shares her home with five dogs of her own. In 1998 she and her crew of "Designer Dogs" were invited to appear on an episode of the TV Sitcom "Mad About You." Sue has appeared on Martha Stewart's show to talk about her rescue work. Nabisco produced a terrific video of Sue teaching the basics for having a well-behaved pet, covering housebreaking, chewing, separation anxiety, etc. It's very informative and also VERY funny. A powerful HBO special on Sue's shelter aired this past winter. Sue's publications include Great Dog Adoptions: A Guide for Shelters, published by the Latham Foundation and a full-length book entitled Successful Dog Adoption, by Howell, the first full-length book on this subject.
This past spring Sue was one of the main speakers at the first European conference on shelter work. Here she met a man who has started the first and only animal shelter in Kosovo. Sue hopes to be able to go there and help him.

Steve Surfman

Steve Surfman has been photographing animals for over 30 years. He is a multiple award winning photographer. He prides himself on capturing the very essence of dogs in their sports—their energy, enthusiasm, instinct and natural beauty. His photographs have appeared in many national dog publications including the AKC Gazette. Steve is a participant in the AKC stock photo agency which supplies photographs to major advertising agencies. He has been published in News Day, a major New York newspaper and his photographs have also appeared in the Boston Globe.
He is a member of the Scottish Deerhound Club of America and Mid-Atlantic Deerhounds. This year one of Steve's Deerhound photos won first place at the Scottish Deerhound National Specialty. In 2002 Steve received an award from the Dog Writers Association of America for "Best Black and White Photograph."
Early in 2003 one of Steve's agility photos won first prize for action photography in the prestigious Dog Fanciers of America annual photo contest. He recently had several photos (most of them taken at Camp), accepted for a calendar due out in 2006!

Mary started to professionally train dogs when she was 14. A Pointer breeder in town wanted his puppies "started" and his younger dogs worked. Mary then went to Angel Memorial Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts to become a veterinary technician. Upon graduation, she moved back to Maine and started working for a multi-vet practice. Mary became one of the first licensed vet techs in Maine.
She has attended behavior, nutrition, orthopedic and obedience seminars annually since the mid '80s has been teaching public obedience classes since 1981. In 1992 Mary and her husband started Fresh Start, offering private lessons, public obedience classes, behavior evaluations and boarding and training. All training is done using positive, motivational methods.
In addition to owning Labs for over 20 years, Mary has raised, trained and shown Labs in obedience and conformation in both the U.S. and Canada, earning Highest Scoring Labrador Retriever and Highest Scoring Sporting Dog at trials. Her most titled Lab was Cory, who earned both American and Canadian Championships, CDXs in both countries and an American TDX title. Cory's sister Storm was the town's first police tracking dog. During Storm's career, she found three lost children and eight wanted people.
Mary became involved with AKC tracking in 1985 and is now a Tracking Judge for the TD, TDX and VST titles. She is on the AKC's Tracking Advisory Committee. Mary has taught over 3000 people how to start their dogs tracking and have fun with the sport. She has started dogs as young as eight weeks of age and as old as 12 years.

Her first dog took her to obedience class long ago without telling her that dogs (she was a cat person at the time) and dog training were habit forming.
Dorie also organizes and teaches tracking at near-monthly get-togethers with club members and organizes weekend tracking clinics twice a year with Camp instructors.
